A Surprising Authoritarian Nation Permits Visa-Free Travel for 35 Countries .
An unexpected authoritarian nation is now allowing visa-free travel for citizens of 35 countries. Despite the political climate in Belarus deterring many Western tourists, the government announced this week that it is expanding visa-free travel to include citizens of 35 countries within Europe's Schengen zone.
The approved list features EU members such as Germany, Estonia, and France, along with independent non-members like Switzerland and Norway. Previously, travelers needed a visa from a consulate, but the new regulations only require a passport and proof of travel insurance for stays up to 30 days.
Travel Updates:
- A National Park has implemented new restrictions for visitors.
- Delta Air Lines has introduced a favorable baggage policy change.
- United Airlines quickly responded to a passenger incident.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry stated that this policy change, endorsed by President Lukashenko, aims to revitalize the country's virtually non-existent tourism industry amidst ongoing political tensions.
Underlying Motives: 'Balancing Between the West and Russia'
Political analyst Valery Karbalevich told the Associated Press that Lukashenko seeks to balance relations between the West and Russia. With the 2025 election approaching, he aims for Western recognition of the results rather than facing it in a "besieged fortress." Lukashenko has been in power for 30 years as of July 20.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry described the move as one of "openness and peacefulness." However, the country's role in the Russian attacks on Ukraine—though not directly participating, Belarus has allowed Russian troops to use its territory—has severely damaged its reputation as a tourist destination.
