Forget about paying high baggage fees at airports: Here’s a more affordable travel option.

Among the many frustrations traveler face, baggage fees and issues related to checking bags frequently top the list.

In early 2024, major airlines such as JetBlue, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines have all increased their baggage fees, causing dissatisfaction among travelers. Alaska Airlines now has some of the steepest fees in the industry, charging up to $45 for the first checked bag and between $50 and $60 for additional bags, depending on when you add them to your ticket—so don’t wait until you’re at the airport.

Although shipping luggage independently of the airline isn’t a new concept and was once mainly associated with long-term moves or trips, it's gaining popularity for family travel. As airline fees for second and third bags increased last spring, the cost of traveling with children has become even higher.
There are now services that let you use an online calculator to determine the cost of shipping your luggage, including carry-on bags up to 25 pounds, checked luggage up to 50 pounds, and oversized items up to 70 pounds. These can be sent to airports, hotels, or private addresses anywhere in the U.S.
